Self-proclaimed comic book nerds, Halifax Pride members, carollers in a horse-drawn carriage, drag queens, a man on stilts and a carrot on wheels met on Cunard Street and paraded up Agricola to join families gathered at the Hydrostone to see the annual tree lighting ceremony.

It was a blast.

“Twenty years ago, this wouldn’t have happened.  It’s good for building community and to change the stigma about the North End,” said Reverend Bob Chiassion, manager of merchant’s co-op Plan B.

“It’s awesome. Parades make me happy,” said ten-year-old Julianna Osellanem.

Bernard Smith, executive director of the North End Business Association, was the brains behind the parade.  “The city worries me because it doesn’t take enough care of its people anymore.”

He’s proud to have started this new tradition.
